諸外国では以前からマスターズ陸上が開催されていました。1976年、当時39歳の鴻池清司選手はハードル競技で世界の記録を調べました。国際的なマスターズ陸上競技での優勝タイムを自身が上回っていることが分かり 翌77年に第２回世界選手権に出場。オリンピック元金メダリストと一般の人が一緒に走っているのに驚きました。鴻池は予選で大会新記録を出しながら、決勝は転倒して８位。この経験から「本大会をぜひ日本でも」と行動を開始しました。 Masters Athletics has been held in other countries for a long time. In 1976, Seiji Konoike (39 yrs) looked up world records in hurdles. His winning time showed better than international Masters record. He participated the 2nd world championship in 1977, and was surprised that previous Olympic gold medalists and ordinary people ran together. Konoike set a new tournament record in qualifying race,but in the final game, he fell down in the race with the 8th rank. He started to manage the tournament project in also Japan. 国際大会から帰国後、仲間14人で和歌山マスターズ連盟を設立しました。78年には和歌山市で西日本マスターズ陸上競技大会を開催することができ、80年には、 同市において第１回全日本大会開催にこぎ着けました。 After the international game, we established the Wakayama Masters. West Japan Masters Athletics Tournament was held in Wakayama (1978). In 1980, Wakayama city hosted the first All Japan Masters Athletics. Athletics can become the foundation of all kinds of sports.
